NaTrue-Label – a new label for Natural Cosmetics points the way

Certification is open to all cosmetic producers and distributors and all products that fulfil the criteria will be certified. Membership to NaTrue is not a condition for certification.

To obtain the label, the product formulation’s compliance with the criteria is verified by an independent certifier on the basis of the manufacturer’s documentation. This is followed by an audit of the production facilities.

The NaTrue-Label criteria’s key characteristics are:

  • only water, natural ingredients, derived natural ingredients and nature-identical ingredients are permitted,
  • manufacturing processes for Natural Cosmetics and their raw materials are strictly regulated,
  • strict minimum levels for natural ingredients and natural organic ingredients as well as
  • strict maximum levels for derived natural ingredients apply for all three grades: Natural Cosmetics, Natural Cosmetics with Organic Ingredients and Organic Cosmetics.

Natural ingredients, derived natural ingredients, nature-identical ingredients and water

Natural ingredients are ingredients found in nature and are not chemically modified.

Derived natural ingredients are ingredients that are derived through chemical reactions - from natural ingredients only. The permitted chemical reactions are clearly set out in the NaTrue Criteria.

Nature-identical substances are substances that exist in nature but are derived through chemical reaction. They are only permitted for preservatives and minerals when the natural substances cannot be recovered from nature in the desired quality and/or quantity.

Water is often the largest single ingredient in cosmetic products. It is not counted when calculating the level of natural ingredients of a recipe.
