Why don't the NaTrue criteria contain any statements on animal experiments?

The German cosmetics industry has voluntarily foregone animal experiments for finished cosmetic products since 1989. In 1998 all animal experiments for finished cosmetic products were banned by law in Germany. Since 11 September 2004 they are no longer permitted anywhere in the EU. Furthermore, it is forbidden to market cosmetics which have been tested on animals.

The health safety of raw materials used in cosmetics must, however, be proven. Within the framework of chemicals legislation which also applies to cosmetics raw materials, animal experiments are even prescribed. Some of the safety tests required by chemicals legislation can currently only be done through animal testing.

Against this backdrop any further statements on animal experiments within the framework of NaTrue criteria would not be relevant. Neither natural nor conventional cosmetics are tested on animals.
